Short answer: A COB (Chip on Board) LED screen mounts the LED chips directly on the board and seals them under a protective layer. An SMD screen uses separate LED packages soldered onto the board. COB is tougher, easier to clean and gives deeper blacks at fine pitch. SMD usually costs less. The AbsenLive SA1.5 is Absen’s first COB panel in its Saturn rental series, with a 1.56 mm pixel pitch.
What is the AbsenLive SA1.5?
The SA1.5 was launched at ISE 2026. It is the first COB panel in AbsenLive’s Saturn (SA) rental series. Key points:
- 1.56 mm pixel pitch
- Flip-chip COB with a dual-layer magnesium cabinet
- Low-reflection surface
- Works with existing Saturn (SA) series accessories
- Absen states 40% better stability and 30% lower power use than conventional alternatives (manufacturer figures)
COB vs SMD: what is the difference?
| COB LED screen | SMD LED screen | |
|---|---|---|
| How LEDs are mounted | Chips bonded directly to the board and sealed | Individual LED packages soldered on |
| Impact resistance | High, because the surface is sealed | Lower, because LEDs can be knocked off |
| Fine pitch (below 2 mm) | Very good | Possible, but more fragile |
| Black level and contrast | Deeper blacks | Good |
| Cleaning | Easy, flat surface | Needs care |
| Price | Usually higher | Usually lower |
Why does COB matter for rental?
Rental panels get packed, carried and built again and again. On fine-pitch SMD panels, a knock during load-out can break LEDs off the edge of a module. A sealed COB surface takes these knocks much better. That is why COB is moving into rental, especially for fine-pitch screens used close to the audience, such as TV studios, conference stages and premium weddings.
What was the SA1.5 group buying programme?
Absen Europe ran a group buying programme for the SA1.5 for European rental and staging companies until 30 September 2026. Partners bought from one production batch to keep colour and LED binning the same across their fleets. The programme was Europe-only and has now ended. Buyers in Pakistan should contact Irfan Corporation for current pricing.
Should you choose COB or SMD in Pakistan?
- Choose COB for fine pitch (below about 2 mm), close viewing, TV studios, control rooms, and screens that people may touch or bump.
- Choose SMD for larger pitch (2.6 mm and above), big halls and outdoor events, where budget per square metre matters more.
