Short answer: Pixel pitch is the distance in millimetres from the centre of one LED pixel to the next. P2.5 means 2.5 mm. A smaller number gives a sharper picture up close but costs more. A simple rule: the closest viewer should stand at least 1 metre away for every 1 mm of pitch. For comfortable viewing, allow 2 to 3 times that distance.
What does pixel pitch mean?
Look closely at any SMD screen and you will see a grid of tiny dots. Each dot is one pixel. Pixel pitch is the space between the centres of two neighbouring dots.
- P10: dots are 10 mm apart. Fine for a roadside billboard.
- P3.9: dots are 3.9 mm apart. Common for event stages and large halls.
- P2.5: dots are 2.5 mm apart. Good for showrooms and lobbies.
- P1.5 and below: dots are very close. Used in boardrooms and control rooms.

How far away should viewers stand?
Use these two simple rules of thumb:
- Minimum viewing distance (metres) ≈ pixel pitch (mm). Closer than this, people start to see individual dots.
- Comfortable viewing distance ≈ 2 to 3 × pixel pitch (metres). At this distance the picture looks smooth to most people.
| Pixel pitch | Minimum distance | Comfortable distance | Typical use | Absen series with this pitch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| P1.25 | 1.3 m | 2.5 to 4 m | Boardroom, control room | CL V3, X V2 |
| P1.5 to P1.9 | 1.5 to 2 m | 3 to 6 m | Meeting room, TV studio, lobby | XL, K V3, NT V2 Indoor |
| P2.5 to P2.9 | 2.5 to 3 m | 5 to 9 m | Showroom, mall, banquet hall | K V3, AW, SA-C |
| P3.9 | 4 m | 8 to 12 m | Event stage, wedding hall, auditorium | PL V3, NT V2 Outdoor |
| P4.8 to P6.25 | 5 to 6 m | 10 to 19 m | Concert stage, stadium, building front | PL V3, A99 |
| P8 to P10 | 8 to 10 m | 16 to 30 m | Roadside billboard, rooftop | A25, A99 |
These are starting points, not hard limits. Text-heavy content, such as stock tickers or price lists, needs a finer pitch than video does. Cameras also need a finer pitch than the human eye.
How does pixel pitch affect resolution?
Pitch and screen size together set the resolution. To find how many pixels fit across a screen, divide the width in millimetres by the pitch.
Pixels across = screen width (mm) ÷ pixel pitch (mm)
| Screen width | At P2.5 | At P3.9 | At P10 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 m | 1,200 px | 768 px | 300 px |
| 4.8 m | 1,920 px (Full HD width) | 1,229 px | 480 px |
| 6 m | 2,400 px | 1,536 px | 600 px |
A 4.8 m wide P2.5 screen is exactly 1,920 pixels wide, the width of a Full HD video. A P10 screen of the same width has only 480 pixels across. That is fine at 20 metres but blocky at 3 metres.
Our SMD screen size guide shows how to work out width, height and cabinet count.
Does a smaller pixel pitch always mean a better screen?
No. A smaller pitch only helps if people stand close enough to notice it. Choosing P2.5 for a billboard seen from 30 metres adds cost without any visible benefit.
| Choose a finer pitch if… | Choose a larger pitch if… |
|---|---|
| Viewers stand within a few metres | Most viewers are far away |
| The screen shows text, data or small details | The screen shows video and big images |
| The screen will be filmed for TV or social media | The budget is tight and the screen is large |
| It is a premium space like a boardroom or flagship store | It is a roadside, rooftop or stadium screen |
Pixel pitch is also the biggest single driver of price. See SMD screen price in Pakistan.
Which pixel pitch is right for common uses in Pakistan?
- Roadside billboard on a main road: P6 to P10. Traffic is usually 15 metres or more away. See the outdoor LED billboard guide.
- Shop front facing a footpath: P2.5 to P4, because people walk past at 2 to 5 metres. See the shop SMD screen guide.
- Wedding or banquet hall stage: P2.6 to P3.9. Guests sit 5 to 20 metres away. See SMD screens for wedding halls.
- Corporate boardroom: P1.2 to P1.9, often COB.
- Mosque or auditorium hall: P2.5 to P3.9, depending on the room depth.

Frequently asked questions
P10 means the pixel pitch is 10 mm. The centres of two neighbouring pixels are 10 mm apart. It is common for outdoor billboards seen from far away.
P2.5 is sharper because its pixels are closer together. It only looks better if viewers stand closer than about 8 metres. Beyond that, P3.9 looks almost the same and costs less.
For most indoor screens, P1.9 to P3.9 works well. Use P1.9 or finer if people sit within 3 metres, and P3.9 for large halls.
About 4 metres. For a comfortable picture, place the nearest viewers 8 to 12 metres away.
It is not a good idea. Different pitches have different resolutions and often different brightness, so the join will be visible.
