Shop SMD Screen Guide: Storefront and In-Store SMD Displays for Retail

Short answer: For a shop, choose the screen by where it goes. Behind a window that gets sun, use a high-brightness screen. On an outside wall, use an IP65 outdoor screen. Inside the store, a standard indoor screen is enough. For walk-past viewing, a pixel pitch of P1.5 to P3.9 looks sharp. Transparent LED keeps the shop visible through the glass.

Retail streets and malls in Pakistan are crowded with signs. A moving, bright display is one of the few things that makes people stop. Here is how to choose the right type for your shop.

How bright should a shop window screen be?

A screen behind glass that faces the street needs extra brightness. Glass reflects light, and the afternoon sun can fall straight on the screen. A standard indoor screen will look faded during the day.

  • Window in shade or a covered mall: a normal indoor screen is often enough.
  • Window facing direct sun: choose a high-brightness indoor or semi-outdoor screen.
  • Open-air front: choose an outdoor screen with an IP65 rating and 5,000 nits or more.

Read indoor vs outdoor SMD screen for the full comparison.

What pixel pitch does a shop need?

Shoppers walk past at 1 to 5 metres, which is close. A larger pitch looks grainy at that distance.

Shopper distanceSuggested pitch
1 to 2 m (inside the store, at the counter)P1.2 to P1.9
2 to 4 m (window, mall corridor)P1.9 to P2.5
4 to 8 m (shop front from the footpath)P2.5 to P3.9
Across the roadP4 to P8

The K V3 is designed for retail. It comes in 1.89, 2.5 and 3.9 mm pitches with flexible sizing. For more on choosing a pitch, see the pixel pitch guide.

What should a shop screen show?

  • New arrivals and sale offers, updated as often as you like.
  • Short product videos in a loop of 15 to 30 seconds.
  • Prices and menus for food outlets and pharmacies.
  • Brand videos for flagship stores.
  • Seasonal campaigns for Eid, Independence Day and wedding season.

Keep text large and messages short. People decide in a few seconds whether to look. Use an asynchronous player so content plays on a schedule and can be changed from your phone. See the SMD screen controller guide.

How do you keep running costs low?

  • Set the screen to turn off after closing time.
  • Use automatic brightness for window and outdoor screens.
  • Design content with darker backgrounds.
  • Choose energy-saving models. The K V3 switches to a power-saving black screen when there is no signal.

See SMD screen power consumption for how to estimate daily units.

What do malls and landlords usually ask for?

Mall management and building owners often have rules for shop-front screens. Before you order, check:

  • Allowed size and position on the shop front.
  • Maximum brightness at night.
  • Electrical connection, load and earthing requirements.
  • Installation timing (often only after closing hours).
  • Any approval needed from the local authority for outdoor signs.

Shop SMD screen checklist

  1. Where will the screen go: inside, behind glass or outside?
  2. How close will shoppers stand?
  3. How much sun hits the spot, and at what time of day?
  4. What will you show, and who will update it?
  5. How many hours a day will it run?
  6. What do the mall or landlord rules allow?

For the basics, read what is an SMD screen. For costs, read SMD screen price in Pakistan. Frequently asked questions

What is the best SMD screen for a shop window?

A high-brightness screen with a fine pitch, such as P1.9 to P2.5. If the window gets direct sun, brightness matters more than anything else.

Can I put an SMD screen on my shop glass without blocking the view?

Yes. A transparent SMD screen, such as the Absen JD-H with over 90% transparency, shows content while customers can still see inside.

How do I change the content on my shop screen?

Use an asynchronous player with Wi-Fi or 4G. You can upload new videos and schedules from a phone or computer.

Do shop SMD screens need much maintenance?

Indoor shop screens need regular dusting and checks. Outdoor screens also need seal and power checks. See our SMD screen maintenance guide.

Is an LED poster screen better than a TV in a shop window?

Usually, yes. LED poster screens are much brighter than most TVs, so they stay readable behind glass during the day.
