SMD Screen Power Consumption: Daily units, backup power and load shedding (Absen Pakistan guide)

SMD Screen Power Consumption: How Many Units Does an SMD Screen Use?

Short answer: SMD screen power consumption depends on its size, brightness, content and running hours. Daily units (kWh) = screen area (m²) × average power (W per m²) × hours ÷ 1,000. Use the average power figure from the datasheet for your bill estimate. Use the maximum figure to size cables, breakers, generators and UPS units.

Electricity is one of the biggest running costs of an SMD screen in Pakistan, especially for outdoor screens that run 14 hours or more a day. The good news is that you can estimate it accurately before you buy.

Average vs maximum power: what is the difference?

Every SMD screen datasheet lists two power figures, usually in watts per square metre:

FigureWhat it meansUse it for
Maximum powerPower drawn when every LED shows full white at full brightnessCable size, breakers, generator and UPS sizing
Average (typical) powerPower drawn with normal video contentMonthly bill estimates

Real content is rarely full white. That is why average power is much lower than the maximum, often around a third of it. Check the datasheet for the exact figures of the model you are buying.

How do you calculate daily units?

One unit on your electricity bill is one kilowatt-hour (kWh).

Daily units = area (m²) × average power (W/m²) × hours per day ÷ 1,000

Worked example (example figures, not a specific model):

  • Indoor screen, 4 × 2.5 m = 10 m²
  • Average power from the datasheet: 200 W/m²
  • Running time: 10 hours a day

10 × 200 × 10 ÷ 1,000 = 20 units a day, or about 600 units a month.

Multiply the monthly units by the per-unit rate on your commercial electricity bill to estimate the cost.

Real Absen figure: the A25 outdoor series is rated at less than 1 kWh per square metre per day. An 18 m² billboard (6 × 3 m) would then use under 18 units a day.

What changes the power use?

FactorEffect
Brightness settingThe biggest factor. Outdoor screens at full sun brightness use far more than indoor screens
ContentWhite and bright backgrounds use more; dark backgrounds use less
Running hours18 hours a day uses almost twice as much as 10 hours
LED and driver technologyEfficient designs use less for the same brightness
HeatHot screens need fans or air conditioning, which add to the load
Idle behaviourSome screens cut power when there is no signal

Absen builds energy saving into several series. The K V3 switches to a black-screen power-saving mode when the signal is disconnected. Absen says its XL series is up to 40% more energy efficient than traditional SMD displays.

How do you reduce an SMD screen’s electricity bill?

  1. Use automatic brightness. A light sensor dims the screen when it is darker outside. At night an outdoor screen needs only a small part of its daytime brightness.
  2. Set a schedule. Turn the screen off when nobody is watching, for example after shop hours.
  3. Design darker content. Dark backgrounds with bright text read well and use less power.
  4. Choose efficient hardware. Compare average power per m² between models, not just the price.
  5. Keep it cool and clean. Blocked vents make fans work harder and shorten LED life. See SMD screen maintenance.

How do you size a generator or UPS?

Use the maximum power, plus spare margin.

Worked example: a 10 m² screen with a maximum of 600 W/m² (example figure) can draw 6 kW at full white. Add other loads on the same supply, such as lights and sound at an event, then add a safety margin.

Large screens are usually connected to a three-phase supply, with the cabinets spread evenly across the three phases. Pakistan’s mains supply is 230 V single-phase or 400 V three-phase at 50 Hz.

For most permanent screens, a full UPS for the whole screen is expensive. A common approach:

  • Small UPS for the controller and media player, so content keeps running and the screen restarts cleanly.
  • Generator or building backup for the screen itself, if it must stay on during load shedding.

How do you protect a screen from load shedding and voltage swings?

Power cuts and unstable voltage are a leading cause of failed power supplies and modules in Pakistan. Protect the screen with:

  • A voltage stabiliser or protected distribution box on the screen’s supply.
  • Surge protection on the main line, especially for outdoor screens.
  • Proper earthing for the screen, the structure and the controller.
  • Staged power-on, so all cabinets do not switch on at the same moment and trip the breaker. A power sequencer or a timed distribution box does this.
  • A clean shutdown routine. Turn the screen off before the controller where possible.

Can an SMD screen run on solar power?

Yes, if the system is sized for it. The inverter must handle the screen’s maximum power, and the batteries must cover the hours you want to run without the grid or sun. Use the average power to estimate daily energy and the maximum power to size the inverter. Ask a qualified solar installer to design the system with your screen’s datasheet.

Frequently asked questions

How many units does an SMD screen use per day?

Multiply the area in m² by the average power in W/m² and by the hours per day, then divide by 1,000. A 10 m² screen averaging 200 W/m² for 10 hours uses 20 units a day.

Does an outdoor SMD screen use more electricity than an indoor one?

Yes, usually. It runs much brighter and for longer hours. Automatic dimming at night reduces the gap.

Can I run an SMD screen on a UPS during load shedding?

Small screens, yes. For large screens, a UPS for the controller plus a generator for the screen is more practical.

Does content affect power consumption?

Yes. Bright white backgrounds draw much more power than dark ones. Designing content with darker backgrounds lowers the bill.

Why does my SMD screen trip the breaker when switched on?

All cabinets draw current at the same moment. Use staged power-on, check that the breaker suits the maximum load, and spread the load across phases.
