Short answer: Good SMD screen maintenance starts with one fact: most problems in Pakistan come from dust, heat and unstable power. Clean the screen gently with a soft brush or dry air, never with water or chemicals. Keep vents and fans clear and the supply protected. Replace faulty modules with spares from the same production batch so the colour matches. A simple monthly and yearly check plan prevents most breakdowns.
What are the most common SMD screen problems?
| Problem | What you see | Common cause |
|---|---|---|
| Dead pixel | One dot stays dark or one colour | Failed LED or a bad solder joint |
| Dark block | A square stays black | Module, cable or power supply fault |
| Colour patch | One area looks different in colour | Mixed batches, or a replaced module that does not match |
| Flicker or lines | Lines on camera, or flicker | Low refresh rate, loose data cable, settings |
| Whole cabinet off | A large block is dark | Power supply or receiving card fault |
| Picture frozen or missing | No content | Controller, sending card or source problem |
Many of these are quick fixes when you have spare parts and know where to look.
How do you clean an SMD screen safely?
- Turn the screen off and let it cool.
- Use a soft, dry brush or a gentle blower to remove dust. Work in one direction.
- Do not spray water or cleaner on the screen. Liquid can reach the boards.
- Do not wipe hard or use cloth with grit. SMD LEDs sit on the surface and can be knocked off.
- Clean the vents and fan filters on the back or inside the cabinet.
COB screens have a sealed, flat surface and are easier to clean than SMD screens. Our COB vs SMD article explains why.
How do you fix dead pixels and dark blocks?
- A single dead pixel is often left as it is if it is not noticeable. If many appear in one area, replace that module.
- A dark block the size of one module: check the module’s data and power cables first. If the cables are fine, swap the module.
- A dark block the size of a whole cabinet: check the cabinet’s power supply and receiving card.
Module replacement is usually simple:
- Front-service screens: modules are held by magnets and removed from the front with a suction or magnetic tool.
- Rear-service screens: a technician opens the cabinet from behind.
Some designs make this even faster. The Absen A25 series uses a modular power box design that allows 10-second module replacement.
Why do spare modules need to match?
LEDs from different production batches can have slightly different colour and brightness. All LEDs also dim slowly with age. A new module from a different batch can show up as a visible square on an older screen.
To avoid this:
- Buy spare modules with the screen, from the same batch.
- Store them properly in a dry, cool place.
- Recalibrate if needed, so new and old modules match.
Our rental SMD screen guide explains why same-batch panels matter so much.
How do heat and power affect the screen’s life?
- Heat is the biggest enemy of LEDs and power supplies. Keep air paths open, check fans, and do not block the back of the screen. For enclosed rooftop boxes, check the air conditioning before summer.
- Unstable power damages power supplies and modules. Use a stabiliser, surge protection and good earthing. See SMD screen power consumption for a full protection list.
- Dust and moisture cause corrosion and short circuits, especially after the monsoon and in coastal Karachi.
Simple SMD screen maintenance schedule
| How often | What to check |
|---|---|
| Daily | Screen turns on and off on schedule; content plays; no dark blocks |
| Weekly | Look for dead pixels, colour patches or flicker |
| Monthly | Dust the screen surface and vents; check fans; check controller and media player |
| Before summer | Clean filters; test cooling and air conditioning; check brightness settings |
| Before and after monsoon (outdoor) | Check seals, cable entries and drainage; look for rust on the structure |
| Every year | Full inspection of power supplies, cables, earthing and structure bolts; firmware updates; check spare stock |
What should you keep on site?
- Spare modules (from the same batch)
- One or two spare power supplies and receiving cards
- Data and power cables
- Module removal tool
- Soft brush and blower
- A copy of the screen’s configuration file, kept safe
When should you call a technician?
Call a trained technician for power supply faults, receiving card problems, calibration, structural issues or anything involving mains voltage. Opening the screen without training can be dangerous and may void the warranty.
Buying an original screen with a real warranty makes support much easier. Read how to check an original Absen screen. Frequently asked questions

Yes. A technician can replace a single LED, but the usual fix is to replace the whole module with a matching spare.
It probably comes from a different production batch, or the rest of the screen has aged. Use same-batch spares and recalibrate if needed.
It depends on the brand, heat, power quality and running hours. Absen rates its A25 outdoor series for a service life of up to 10 years. Good maintenance helps any screen last longer.
Do quick checks daily and weekly, clean it monthly, and have a full inspection every year. Outdoor screens also need checks before summer and around the monsoon.
