Short answer: An LED video wall has no visible joins, is very bright and can be built in almost any size or shape, so it suits large halls, lobbies, outdoor sites and events. An LCD video wall is cheaper for small to medium walls viewed up close, but it always shows thin lines between panels. A projector is the cheapest way to get a big picture, but it needs a dark room and fades in daylight.
How do the three options compare?
| LED video wall | LCD video wall | Projector | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Joins between panels | None (seamless) | Thin bezel lines, often around 0.9 to 3.5 mm | None |
| Brightness | High. Indoor about 600 to 1,500 nits, outdoor 5,000+ | Medium, often around 500 to 700 nits | Depends on room darkness |
| Works in daylight | Yes | Indoors, yes | Poorly |
| Outdoor use | Yes, with outdoor models | No | No |
| Size and shape | Almost any size, curves and creative shapes | Grid of fixed panel sizes | Limited by throw distance and brightness |
| Close viewing | Needs fine pitch (cost rises) | Very sharp up close | Fine |
| Lifespan | Long, with module-level repair | Long, but panel replacement may not match | Lamp or light source wears out |
| Upfront cost | Highest | Medium | Lowest |
When is an LED video wall the best choice?
- Large screens. Above about 3 to 4 metres wide, an LED wall is usually the cleanest option.
- Bright rooms and outdoors. Lobbies with glass walls, shop fronts and billboards.
- Events and stages. Rental LED panels can be built and taken down quickly.
- Creative shapes. Curved walls, columns and wide stage backdrops.
- Long running hours. Faulty modules can be swapped without changing the whole wall.
Fine-pitch LED and COB screens now work in boardrooms too. The Absen CL V3 comes in 0.93 and 1.25 mm pitch, and the all-in-one X V2 is a ready-made SMD screen for meeting rooms in 1.25 and 1.56 mm pitch.
When is an LCD video wall the better choice?
- Small walls viewed very close, such as a 2 × 2 grid of 55-inch panels in a small control room.
- Text-heavy content where people sit within a metre or two.
- Tight budgets for small to medium sizes.
The main drawback is the bezel. Every LCD wall shows thin lines between panels. They cut through faces, text and charts, and they are more noticeable in presentations than in video.
When is a projector enough?
- Dark rooms such as classrooms with blinds, cinemas and some auditoriums.
- Occasional use where cost matters more than picture quality.
- Temporary setups where a screen cannot be mounted.
Projectors struggle in bright rooms and in halls where the lights stay on, such as banquet halls during dinner. The picture fades, and people walking in front of the projector cast shadows.
How do the costs compare over time?
Upfront, a projector is cheapest and an LED wall costs the most. Over time the gap narrows:
- LED walls last a long time and can be repaired one module at a time.
- LCD panels that fail may need replacing with a newer model that does not match the others.
- Projectors need replacement light sources and do not suit long daily hours.

Which is right for your space?
| Space | Best fit |
|---|---|
| Boardroom, 2 to 4 m viewing | Fine-pitch LED or all-in-one LED; LCD if the budget is tight |
| Control room, operators close by | Fine-pitch LED (COB) or LCD |
| Lobby or reception with daylight | LED video wall |
| Banquet hall or auditorium | LED video wall; projector only if the room can be darkened |
| Shop front or window | High-brightness LED. See the shop SMD screen guide |
| Outdoor | Outdoor LED only. See the outdoor LED billboard guide |
| Classroom with blinds | Projector or all-in-one LED |

Frequently asked questions
For large walls, bright rooms and outdoor sites, yes, because it has no joins and is much brighter. For small walls viewed very close on a tight budget, LCD can be the better value.
No. LED cabinets join without visible lines, which is why they are called seamless.
Not well. The picture fades when the room lights are on or daylight comes in. An LED wall is the better choice for bright rooms.
It is a ready-made SMD screen with the screen, controller and speakers in one package, sold in fixed sizes like a large TV. Absen’s X V2 and X Ultrawide are examples.
Both can last many years. LED walls are easier to repair because a single module can be replaced.
