Short answer: An outdoor SMD screen is much brighter than an indoor one (usually 5,000 nits or more, against about 600 to 1,500 nits indoors). It is also sealed against dust and rain, normally to IP65 on the front. Indoor screens use a finer pixel pitch because people stand closer. Never use an indoor screen outside. Using an outdoor screen indoors works, but it costs more and is often too bright.
What is the main difference between indoor and outdoor SMD screens?
They are built for different light, weather and viewing distances. This table sums it up.
| Feature | Indoor SMD screen | Outdoor SMD screen |
|---|---|---|
| Brightness | About 600 to 1,500 nits | Usually 5,000 nits or more |
| Dust and water protection | Usually not sealed (often IP30 to IP43) | IP65 front, sealed power box |
| Typical pixel pitch | P1.2 to P3.9 | P2.5 to P10 |
| Viewing distance | 1 to 15 metres | 5 to 50 metres or more |
| Cabinet | Lighter, thinner | Heavier, with gaskets and weatherproof connectors |
| Cooling | Room air | Fans, vents or air conditioning in some setups |
| Hours of use | Business hours | Often 14 to 18 hours a day |
| Cost per sq ft at the same pitch | Lower | Higher |
Why do outdoor screens need so much brightness?
Direct sunlight is extremely bright. A screen has to be brighter than the light falling on it, or the picture washes out. A typical phone screen gives out a few hundred to about a thousand nits, and you know how hard it is to read in the sun.
That is why outdoor screens in Pakistan, where the summer sun is strong, are usually 5,000 nits or more. At night they should dim to a few hundred nits. Most good outdoor screens have a light sensor that adjusts brightness automatically. This also cuts power use, as explained in SMD screen power consumption.
Brightness is measured in nits (candela per square metre). Here is how the unit is defined.
What does IP65 mean for an outdoor screen?
The IP code has two digits (IP code explained):
- First digit (dust): 6 means dust-tight. No dust gets in.
- Second digit (water): 5 means protected against water jets from any direction.
For Pakistan, the dust digit matters as much as the water digit. Fine dust in Lahore, Multan or Quetta gets into unsealed electronics and causes overheating and failures. In Karachi, salty sea air adds corrosion. Monsoon rain from July to September tests every seal.
Look for IP65 on the front and a sealed back or power box. Absen’s AW series and A99 series are both IP65 rated.
Can you use an indoor screen outdoors?
No. An indoor screen is too dim for daylight and has no weather sealing. Rain, dust and heat will damage it quickly, and the warranty will not cover it.
Semi-outdoor places need care too. A marquee, a covered car park or a shop window that gets direct sun all count. For a shop window, a high-brightness indoor or semi-outdoor screen is often the right choice. See the shop SMD screen guide.
Can you use an outdoor screen indoors?
Yes, but it is rarely the best choice:
- It costs more per square foot for protection you do not need.
- Its pixel pitch is usually larger, so it looks rough up close.
- It must be turned down a lot, or it will be uncomfortably bright.
Some rental screens are built for both. For example, the NT V2 Outdoor comes in P2.9 and P3.9, and the PL V2 series has indoor and outdoor versions on one platform. Event companies use these so one stock of panels covers both kinds of jobs.
Which pixel pitch suits indoor and outdoor screens?
| Place | Typical viewing distance | Suggested pitch |
|---|---|---|
| Boardroom | 2 to 4 m | P1.2 to P1.9 |
| Showroom or mall atrium | 3 to 10 m | P2.5 to P3.9 |
| Banquet hall stage | 5 to 20 m | P2.6 to P3.9 |
| Shop front (outdoor) | 3 to 8 m | P2.5 to P4 |
| Building front | 15 to 40 m | P6 to P10 |
| Roadside billboard | 20 m or more | P8 to P10 |
For the full method, read the pixel pitch guide.
Which should you choose?
Ask three questions:
- Will direct sunlight or rain ever reach the screen? If yes, choose outdoor.
- How close will the nearest viewer stand? This sets the pitch.
- How many hours a day will it run? Long hours need better cooling and power supplies.

Frequently asked questions
For direct sunlight, usually 5,000 nits or more. Screens in shade or used mainly at night can work with less.
IP65 protects against water jets from any direction, which covers heavy rain. Correct installation also matters: sealed cable entries, drainage and a proper roof or back cover.
They need brighter LEDs, sealed modules and power boxes, stronger cabinets and a structure that can take wind load.
Yes, if the glass does not get strong direct sunlight. If it does, choose a high-brightness model, or the screen will look faded during the day.
Good ones do. A light sensor lowers the brightness after sunset, which saves power and avoids glare for drivers.
