Outdoor LED Billboard in Pakistan: Heat, dust, rain, power and permits: what to check (Absen Pakistan guide)

Outdoor LED Billboard in Pakistan: What to Check Before You Invest

Short answer: An outdoor LED billboard in Pakistan needs high brightness (usually 5,000 nits or more), an IP65 sealed front, good heat management and a structure built for wind. Choose the pitch by road distance, usually P6 to P10 for main roads. Plan power protection for load shedding and voltage swings, and get approval from your local authority before installing.

Digital billboards are replacing printed panaflex on main roads in Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad. One screen can show several advertisers in rotation, and changing an ad takes minutes instead of a print run. But an outdoor screen in Pakistan works in some of the toughest conditions anywhere. This checklist covers what matters.

Can an LED billboard handle Pakistan’s summer heat?

Only if it is designed for it. Summer temperatures in much of Sindh and southern Punjab pass 45 °C, and Jacobabad has recorded days of 50 °C or more. The screen also makes its own heat, and the sun heats its surface further.

What to check:

  • Operating temperature range on the datasheet. Compare it with your city’s summer peak, plus extra for direct sun on the cabinet.
  • Cooling design. Fans, air paths, or air conditioning for enclosed rooftop boxes.
  • Brightness control. Running at full brightness at noon and dimming after sunset reduces both heat and power use.
  • Black LEDs and high contrast. These keep the picture readable without running at maximum brightness all day.

How do you protect a billboard from dust and rain?

RiskWhere it hits hardestWhat to ask for
Fine dustLahore, Multan, Quetta, along highwaysIP65 front, sealed power box, filtered vents
Monsoon rainMost cities, July to SeptemberIP65, sealed cable entries, drainage in the structure
Salty sea airKarachi, Gwadar coastCorrosion-protected cabinets and coated boards
LightningTall, exposed sitesProper earthing and surge protection

IP65 means dust-tight and protected against water jets (IP code explained). Absen’s A99 series, for example, uses IP65 waterproof modules, a fully sealed power box and a stainless-steel breather valve.

What pixel pitch and size suit a roadside billboard?

Choose the pitch from the distance between the screen and the nearest drivers.

SiteTypical viewing distanceSuggested pitch
Shop front on a footpath3 to 8 mP2.5 to P4
Building front in a market10 to 25 mP5 to P8
Main road billboard20 to 60 mP8 to P10
Highway or flyover50 m or moreP10 or larger

The Absen A25 series is built for outdoor advertising, with pitches of 4, 6, 8 and 10 mm. For close-range outdoor screens, such as a shop front or a kiosk, the AW series offers 2.5, 2.8 and 3.9 mm with a 7,680 Hz refresh rate.

For more detail, see the pixel pitch guide and the SMD screen size guide.

How much power does an outdoor billboard use?

Outdoor screens use more power than indoor ones because they run brighter and for longer. The actual figure depends on the model, the content and the brightness setting. Bright, white-heavy ads use more than dark ones.

The A25 series is rated at less than 1 kWh per square metre per day. Use the datasheet’s average power, not the maximum, for your running cost estimate. Our SMD screen power consumption guide shows the sum step by step.

Power protection is not optional in Pakistan. Plan for:

  • A voltage stabiliser or protection on the supply line.
  • Surge protection and proper earthing.
  • A UPS for the controller and media player, so the screen restarts cleanly after a power cut.
  • Staged power-on for large screens, so all cabinets do not draw current at the same moment.

What does the structure need?

A billboard is a sign that catches the wind. The steel structure must be designed for the screen’s weight and for wind load at that height. Ask your supplier for:

  • Structural drawings for the frame and foundation.
  • Rear or front service access. Front-service screens suit walls, while rear service needs a walkway behind the screen.
  • Cable routes that keep water out.

Do you need permission to install a digital billboard?

Yes. Outdoor advertising in Pakistani cities is regulated by local bodies. The authority depends on where the site is, for example the Parks and Horticulture Authority in Lahore, the Capital Development Authority in Islamabad, or the relevant municipal or cantonment body in Karachi. Rules cover size, location, brightness and fees, and they change. Check with the authority for your site before you order the screen.

How do you run ads on an LED billboard?

Most billboards use an asynchronous player. It stores the ads and plays them on a schedule even when no computer is connected. You can update content over 4G or the internet from your office. Our SMD screen controller guide explains the options.

Billboard buying checklist

  1. Brightness of 5,000 nits or more, with automatic dimming.
  2. IP65 front and a sealed power box.
  3. Operating temperature range that suits your city.
  4. Pitch matched to road distance.
  5. Structure designed for the site, with drawings.
  6. Power protection and earthing.
  7. Remote content management.
  8. Written warranty and spare modules from the same batch.
  9. Local permission in hand.

Frequently asked questions

Which pixel pitch is best for a roadside LED billboard?

For most main roads, P8 to P10, because drivers are usually 20 metres or more away. Use a finer pitch if the screen is close to a footpath.

How bright should an outdoor LED billboard be?

Usually 5,000 nits or more for direct sunlight, with automatic dimming at night.

Do LED billboards work during load shedding?

Only with backup power. A generator or a large UPS can run the screen. At the very least, keep the controller on a UPS so it restarts cleanly.

How long does an outdoor LED billboard last?

It depends on the brand, heat and running hours. Absen rates the A25 outdoor series for a service life of up to 10 years.

Can I change the ads remotely?

Yes. With an asynchronous player and an internet or 4G connection, you can upload and schedule ads from your office or phone.
